A new way of processing the data collected in orbit that promises to be a real revolution. <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/it\/?nc2=h_lg\"><br \/>\n  <strong>Amazon Web Services<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/a> is claiming leadership in the space race for <strong>Edge Computing<\/strong>. The International Space Station has <strong>extremely limited downlink<\/strong> bandwidth that is already required for telemetry of existing operations and science activities in favor<strong> of offline edge computing<\/strong>, which is the specialty <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/it\/snow\/\"><br \/>\n  <strong>of AWS&#8217; Snow<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/a> products.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_1890  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p>\u201c<em>Astronauts usually have to send the data and images they collect to facilities on Earth to be processed. Although it&#8217;s only a minor problem when orbiting above Earth, future exploration missions to Mars will encounter significantly longer delays due to the huge volumes of information they will have to travel to Earth and back on a spacecraft<\/em>&#8220;, say the company.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_1891  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p>Well, now things could radically change. <strong>AWS<\/strong> designed<strong> Snowcone<\/strong> to provide offline edge workload capacity using specialized <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/it\/ec2\/?trk=a8d72064-a55e-4a1a-b151-dc58801045e9&amp;sc_channel=ps&amp;sc_campaign=acquisition&amp;sc_medium=ACQ-P%7CPS-GO%7CBrand%7CDesktop%7CSU%7CCompute%7CEC2%7CIT%7CIT%7CText&amp;s_kwcid=AL!4422!3!588221158288!e!!g!!amazon%20ec2&amp;ef_id=CjwKCAjwiJqWBhBdEiwAtESPaDFS-NmAjsHWnoy0VgsWgwj1ZZsYBq91C1GLye680hHLa6dChXYjhRoCxWgQAvD_BwE:G:s&amp;s_kwcid=AL!4422!3!588221158288!e!!g!!amazon%20ec2\"><strong>Amazon EC2<\/strong> <\/a>compute instances. While this makes <strong>Snowcone<\/strong> suitable for a variety of applications in vertical markets such as <strong>manufacturing<\/strong> and <strong>healthcare<\/strong>, it also makes <strong>Snowcone<\/strong> <strong>suitable for extreme work environments<\/strong>, such as <strong>oil rigs<\/strong>, <strong>rescue vehicles<\/strong> , and now, <strong>outer space<\/strong>.<br \/>The <strong>tests<\/strong> by <strong>Axiom Space<\/strong>, a developer of private space infrastructure, took place during the company&#8217;s <strong>April Ax-1 mission<\/strong> to the <strong>International Space Station<\/strong>. The privately funded trip put a crew in space for two weeks. The Snowcone is AWS&#8217; physically smallest device, weighing about <strong>4.5 pounds<\/strong> (2.04 kg) and measuring<strong> 9 inches<\/strong> (22.86 cm), AWS compares it to the size <strong>of a tissue box.<\/strong> Inside, there&#8217;s a<strong> rotating hard drive<\/strong> (<strong>HDD<\/strong>) with <strong>8 terabytes<\/strong> (TB) of storage or a <strong>14TB SSD<\/strong>. The SSD version is the one that Axiom Space brought to the International Space Station.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_1893  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p>The results of AWS&#8217; partnership with Axiom Space were presented by Bill Vass, VP of Engineering at AWS, during the Re:MARS 2022 keynote. Vass beat the <strong>digital twin drum<\/strong>, emphasizing the importance of training and simulation as an accelerator of efficient and safe industrial automation at scale.
